Wellness coaching is a relatively new concept that has gained popularity in recent years. Working with a coach can improve your overall health and wellbeing. If you’re someone who struggles with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, having a coach to guide you and keep you accountable could be perfect for you.
Wellness coaching is not just about exercise and nutrition, but also encompasses mental and emotional wellbeing, recovery and regeneration, and coaching to help clients achieve positive behaviour change with long-term effect.
What is Wellness Coaching?
As a wellness coach, my main goal is to help individuals achieve their health and wellbeing goals. It’s a collaborative process that involves working with clients to identify their goals, develop a plan of action, and provide support and guidance along the way.
So, how do I do that…?
I use a variety of techniques to help clients achieve their goals and the starting point is always to listen with care to the challenges & needs of my clients. Although the issues are often common, everyone’s journey, background, challenges and resources to enable change are unique – and therefore so is my approach.
Language is important… How we speak to ourselves and others about our needs, wants & challenges can influence ours & others perception, and behaviour. As an NLP practitioner, I raise awareness of this in my clients and help them ‘reframe’.
I almost always use hypnosis as a key tool in my work with clients because why wouldn’t we want the other 95% of your mind (the creative, transformative unconscious mind) working for you as well as the conscious mind…?

Why bother with wellness coaching? Well, it can have a number of benefits including: increased motivation and accountability; improved self-awareness and self-efficacy; improved physical & emotional wellbeing; and more resilience, especially to manage stress.
Qualities of an Effective Wellness Coach
Certain qualities are essential for success in this field. Here are some of the most important qualities that I believe a good Wellness Coach should possess:
Empathy
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of others. As a wellness coach, it is crucial to be able to put yourself in your client’s shoes and understand their struggles and challenges. By showing empathy, I build trust and rapport with my clients, which helps them feel more comfortable opening up to me.
Active Listening
Active listening is a skill that involves fully concentrating on what the client is saying and responding in a way that shows I have heard and understood them. It is important to listen to clients without judgement and to ask open-ended questions that encourages them to share more about their experiences. By actively listening, I gain a deeper understanding of my client’s needs and goals.
Communication Skills
Effective communication is essential for a Wellness Coach. It’s my responsibility to be skilled enough to explain complex concepts in a way that is easy for my clients to understand and provide feedback in a way that is constructive and supportive. Good communication skills has helped me build strong relationships with my clients and keep them motivated throughout their wellness journey.
Motivational Skills
Motivation is key to achieving wellness goals. As a wellness coach, I find a variety of ways to motivate my clients and help them stay on track. A large part of this is demonstrating confidence in them and reminding them of all the skills and resources they have to succeed. Helping clients identify their strengths and weaknesses and develop their own strategies to overcome obstacles is important. NLP & hypnosis are powerful tools in this area – providing ‘anchors’ that remind the client of their commitment to change and dialling up their resilience and determination to pursue their wellbeing journey.
